Types of Dental Insurance
There are many types of dental insurance available. Today, many employers are no longer providing dental coverage as part of their benefit plans, and even if they do offer dental benefits, patients may be able to find better coverage independently. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans are the most popular solutions. HMOs offer lower monthly costs, called premiums, but they limit patients to visiting only certain dental offices and receiving only approved treatments. PPOs have similar limitations, but they still offer coverage for out of network dental offices and alternative treatments, which is why many patients choose to pay a slightly higher monthly premium to be part of a PPO benefit plan. If you are evaluating dental insurance plans, don’t hesitate to contact our team. We’ll be happy to help you choose the right plan for your dental health needs.
In-network dental insurance providers have agreed to offer treatments as outlined by MetLife plans. That means you will only have to pay the percentage of treatment costs not covered by your plan. Out of network dentists can charge a higher price or offer non-covered treatments, and you will need to pay the difference between the out of network price and your MetLife plan’s fair costs. You can also choose non-covered materials and treatment methods from an in-network provider.
Treatments Covered by Dental Insurance
MetLife dental insurance plans vary for each patient, but in most cases, your plan will cover a wide range of dentistry services including:
- Prevention – regular dental exams and cleanings, dental sealants, x-rays, and more are covered between 80 and 100% by MetLife plans.
- Restoration – fillings, crowns, tooth extractions, and other restorative treatments are covered between 50 and 80% by most MetLife plans.
- Sedation – nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and IV sedation typically receive partial coverage form dental insurance. Additionally, oral conscious sedatives are taken orally in a liquid or pill form, and the prescriptions are often covered by medical insurance.
Maximizing Your Benefits
The easiest way to maximize your dental insurance benefit plan is to bring your child to our office every six months for a dental checkup and teeth cleaning. Most insurance providers completely cover the cost of preventive care. Additionally, by bringing your kids to our office regularly, you’ll reduce their risk for more advanced oral health concerns that can be costlier and receive a significantly lower percentage of coverage from insurance providers.
